The Apple Expo — Europe’s largest Apple and Mac tradeshow — kicked off in Paris this week to little fanfare. Not helping matters was the conspicuous absence of iPhone, which had been widely expected to make its French debut at conference. So it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that something went awry. It’s now later in the week, and the moment of truth for those who chose to unlock their SIMs, as the 152MB v1.1.1 update is now available via the iTunes Auto-Update.

So as the first iPhone owners update their phones to firmware 1.1.1, we’re getting reports in that not only do third-party applications no longer work, but a post-update reactivation requires a genuine AT&T SIM. In other words, it looks like Apple may have just disabled thousands of unlocked phones around the world.

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple has a project underway to develop a minitablet computer based on the OS X operating system it has developed for the iPhone and the iPod Touch. Shortly after Apple released a brief statement yesterday regarding iPhone modifications and their impacts on warranties, the firm’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing has stepped up to clarify a few issues.

Apple, which on Monday warned customers against using iPhone unlocking tools because they may permanently damage the handsets, has since defended its stance on the matter but said the company is not taking any special measures to intentionally cripple the devices.

The test was reportedly conducted by Perceptive Sciences, a Texas-based usability consulting firm, and relied on data from just ten individuals who had “never used any of the three devices.”

Love it or hate it, everyone’s been talking about it and looking at its sleek, colorful interface, it’s hard not to fall in love with it. But like most decisions based on emotion, buying one may not be the smartest thing to do — at least, not yet.
